A vessel captain says that because the vessels operate in a marine environment, weather is a factor in safe and efficient operation and that accurate weather reporting is vital. When winds are strong and the seas are high, the vessel may experience delays and extended transit times. In August 2004, a tug needed to deliver supplies from New Orleans to Trinidad during the busiest part of the hurricane season. They received a detailed MarineWatch routing forecast from ImpactWeather to assist the captain in charting the safest route. On the initial leg of the trip, Hurricane Frances tracked just to the north of the Caribbean Islands and through the Bahamas. The forecasts and phone consultations with ImpactWeather’s MarineWatch meteorologists helped the captain decide to secure safe harbor as the storm passed to their north. Once the all-clear was given by ImpactWeather, the crew was able to reroute the tug allowing completion of the voyage to Trinidad with minimal weather impact or loss of significant revenue.
