A Fortune 50 company with more than 51,000 employees supplies food and food related items to more than 400,000 client locations. They operate throughout the U.S. and Canada and generated $37 billion in revenue in 2008.
In order to ensure continued production and delivery in the face of a disaster and to meet their post-disaster relief obligations, the company realized that a crisis management plan was vital. No matter what the circumstances, interruptions in inbound deliveries (of items like raw materials, packaging and fuel) or outbound shipments could lead to denial of service to the company’s many key clients. The company’s position in the national critical infrastructure of both Canada and the U.S. requires continuous strict adherence to federal operating standards.
Their Vice President of Safety and Crisis Management decided that a comprehensive enterprise business continuity program with a federally-compliant incident management structure and ongoing training for both the headquarters location and over 100 field offices might be a good idea. ImpactWeather’s Business Continuity Planning program manager generated a multi-part, ever-evolving preparedness plan for the company to utilize that includes an “all hazards” approach covering a myriad of distribution interruption scenarios. The plan includes both severe weather and hurricane response procedures for a variety of types of weather events (varying storm sizes with allowance for quick-forming, “last minute” storms) as well as response refinement for non-weather-related events such as fires, flu epidemic, food contamination and product recalls.

As a result of engaging ImpactWeather's Business Continuity Planning program manager, the client now has a continually evaluated plan to help reduce the potential for loss of income and, more importantly, a way to help ensure the greatest amount of protection for both their employees and client companies. Features of this plan include an incident management handbook, emergency action procedures and a glossary of terms that all company personnel can use in their response to and management of future events/incidents. The plan also includes a training & exercise program to routinely test preparedness and ensure continuous improvement and a corporate program to comply with requirements of NFPA 1600 (U.S. national standard for business continuity/emergency preparedness) and the Private Sector Preparedness Act (Title IX – PS-Prep).
