One of the world's most productive port operators owns and operates 3 terminals along the Eastern Seaboard. Port staff work on all container cranes, run the container yard equipment and operate gates on all terminals.
The port’s General Manager of Berthing and Scheduling says that during the course of operations, when sustained winds are expected to be 35mph or greater, cranes must be shut down and secured and the height of stacked containers must be lowered. This shutdown procedure takes at least 35 minutes and failure to shut down in time puts personnel at risk and could result in damage and/or loss of cranes and containers. Premature or unnecessary shut-downs can cost thousands of dollars in lost production. Each of the more than 30 cranes costs about to $10 million to replace.
The Port needed a way to have severe weather monitored around all of their facilities 24/7. They also wanted to receive a notification at least 1 hour in advance when any of their facilities could be at risk of high winds or lightning so that they could maximize their production and protect their cranes and personnel. They selected ImpactWeather's StormWatch for its severe weather forecasting, monitoring and notification capabilities.
As a result of their utilization of the capabilities provided by ImpactWeather, the Port was able to reduce unnecessary shut-downs by more than half. The Port has also experienced no weather-related damage to any of their equipment nor has it had to expose its employees to unnecessary risk.
