Case Study: Weather for Healthcare
A regional hospital network is based in Texas and consists of 30 hospitals across 5 states. Central Information Management controls operations from a dedicated network operations center.
Hospitals cannot afford any interference in their operations, and weather is one of the major threats to power supply, network connectivity and transportation. Major storms or hurricanes mean that operations and/or availability may have to be curtailed. The decision to evacuate is not made lightly as it results in huge expense and substantial risk. Managing those operational decisions and maintaining awareness of threats to the network is required.
The director of the network operations center says that he must have a way to monitor weather threats across the region. He must be able to communicate such threats to the individual hospitals, when necessary in a timely and accurate manner so they can make operations and/or evacuation decisions. They also needed a way to ascertain whether hurricane or storm effects would affect hospital operations so they know which hospitals are threatened and which are safe. They selected ImpactWeather's StormWatch and TropicsWatch services for their site-specific alerts for thunderstorms, high winds, rainfall, and storm surge.
As a result of their utilization of the capabilities provided by ImpactWeather, the hospital organization was able to make more rapid and informed decisions during the 2005 Hurricane Season, closing only those hospitals in the path of the storms and efficiently managing the flow of supplies and transportation of patients. Losses and unnecessary costs were kept to a minimum despite the devastating 2005 season.
